Hysteroscopy
What Is Hysteroscopy?
Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure used to evaluate and treat the inside of the uterus. A thin, lighted camera (hysteroscope) is inserted into the uterus, allowing direct visualization. This technique enables both diagnostic and surgical interventions.
When Is Hysteroscopy Performed?
- Abnormal uterine bleeding
- Uterine adhesions (Asherman’s syndrome)
- Removal of polyps and fibroids
- Diagnosis and treatment of uterine abnormalities
- Investigation of recurrent miscarriages
- Removal of foreign objects in the uterus (e.g., intrauterine device – IUD)
How Is Hysteroscopy Performed?
The procedure is typically performed under local or general anesthesia. The hysteroscope is inserted through the vagina into the uterus, providing a detailed view of the uterine cavity. Diagnostic hysteroscopy is a quick procedure, while surgical interventions may take slightly longer.
Advantages of Hysteroscopy
- Direct examination of the uterus without open surgery
- Fast recovery with minimal pain
- No need for hospitalization
- Ability to diagnose and treat in a single session
