Abortion

What Is Abortion?

Abortion is a medical or surgical procedure performed to terminate an unwanted or unhealthy pregnancy. It should be carried out within the legally permitted weeks, under safe conditions, and by specialized physicians.

When Is Abortion Performed?

  • Elective Abortion: In Turkey, the legal limit for elective abortion is up to the 10th week of pregnancy, and it can be performed at the request of the pregnant woman.
  • Medical (Therapeutic) Abortion: Performed when the mother’s health is at risk or if the fetus has severe life-threatening anomalies.

Abortion Methods

  • Vacuum Aspiration Method: The most commonly used method, where a thin cannula is inserted into the uterus, and pregnancy tissue is removed using gentle suction.
  • Medical Abortion: Involves the use of medication to induce miscarriage (only applied in specific cases under medical supervision).

Post-Abortion Care

  • Mild bleeding and cramps may occur after the procedure.
  • Hygiene should be maintained to reduce the risk of infection.
  • Sexual intercourse should be avoided for a certain period.
  • Follow-up appointments should not be neglected, and medical advice must be followed.
